In 1948, the World Health Assembly proclaimed April 7 as World Health Day. This date was chosen in commemoration of the founding of the World Health Organization (WHO) and with the need to raise awareness about deadly world diseases and create healthy habits in people.
The celebration of this day has been held since April 7, 1950 and a theme is chosen annually based on the needs and suggestions made by the member states.
Universal health coverage
In recent years, WHO campaigns have worked to promote health care to all corners of the planet, enabling people to have health care when they need it within their community, without having to travel long distances to get it, and make it affordable for families.
Despite this, many people still do not have access to quality health care, and it even happens that many people are forced to choose between health, and other daily expenses, such as food and even a roof.
How is World Health Day celebrated?
During this day various activities are carried out worldwide according to the theme of the year, including:
- Symposia, workshops and talks related or adapted to the annual theme.
- Visits to medical history museums.
- Dissemination of WHO information material through the media and social networks.
- Making agreements between countries related to public health.
- Health promotion in educational institutions.
- Campaigns in hospitals and health centers to inform the population.
World Health Day 2020
Although there is no information on the campaign planned for this year by the WHO, it is essential that we all do our bit to appeal to the population to stay home and prevent the spread of the coronavirus that is so affecting the world in 2020.
